Who puts up “Memorials” at Findagrave?

Find A Grave (FAG) is a great resource, no question. But who puts the “memorials” on the site? Family? No, it’s primarily “volunteers,” who have absolutely no connection to the deceased or their families.

Recently, families have protested to FAG. Sometimes before the bereaved have had the chance to put up a memorial  for a deceased family member, they find it already on the site.  Families have asked FAG to make changes in policy, such as allowing only next-of-kin to put up a memorial within so many weeks or months of the funeral.

Judy Russell of “The Legal Genealogist Blog,” posted an excellent explanation of the issue and the encouraging news that FAG has asked for input on the problem and are looking at the best way to change their policy in regard to memorials. Russell’s post, “Of Leopards and Spots” can be found at The Legal Genealogist.com
